Verification Process

All homes that qualify for the NGBP certification are certified on the basis of the overall project.

It would seem logical that building a log home would be among the most green buildings possible.  However, the materials and building systems are only a part of the equation — efficient and renewable resources.

In a sample project (northern climate, hydronic heating, few innovative technologies), it was not difficult to achieve a Silver rating (out of Bronze, Silver, or Gold). Yet 70% of the points were provided by decisions made by the builder/contractor/homeowner. Leaving only 30% of the points for the log home producer, the majority of these points were generated by documentation provided wth the materials package.

Green building services are provided for the National Association of Home Builders Green Building Program.

The NAHB National Green Building Program (NGBP) is actively certifying homes across the country. The website, www.nahbgreen.org, contains thorough instructions of the process to

· Register as a builder

· Complete the On-line Scoring Tool to identify points that a project can achieve

· Identify certified Verifiers who can be retained by the builder to provide independent, third-party inspection to attest to the fact that the specifications have been properly implemented.

The NGBP has been established based on the NAHB Model Green Building Guidelines that were published in 2006. With the National Green Building Standard (ICC 700) under review by ANSI, the Guidelines were used to establish the NGBP. As soon as ICC700 is published, the Program will provide certification of homes in accordance with it.

Green is not just “hype”, it’s a mindset.

Green building from the perspective of an NAHB Verifier:

¨ Commit to Green — this may be the toughest first step

¨ Begin with a plan — site development as well as house plans

¨ Prepare the details — the secret lies in the details

¨ Specify the products — use ENERGY STAR®, WaterSense®, and other product certifications

¨ Implement the process — Complete the NAHB On-line Scoring Tool and submit the project to NAHB through a Verifier

¨ Enjoy the performance — save energy, save water, breathe clean air, blend into the environment
